The Rise of Digital Advertising in Local Media

This month officially marks 30 years of online advertising. On October 27th, 1994, the website Hotwired previewed the first banner ad sponsored by AT&T (shown above). Notice anything missing? There is NO AT&T logo on this ad! My, how far the digital marketing tactics have come. An era was born with this first banner ad, and since then web banners have been a staple of the internet. Digital ads can be placed automatically, shown to the advertiser’s exact target market, lead a customer to a call to action, and be tracked for views and click through rates.

Over the past 30 years the tactics have changed, budgets have grown, and now digital advertising spending worldwide – which includes both desktop and laptop computers as well as mobile devices – stood at an estimated $522.5 billion in 2021. This figure is forecast to constantly increase in the coming years, reaching a total of $835.82 billion by 2026 © Statista 2024.

Digital advertising had an impact on other forms of media. You can see from the graph below that print advertising was king in 2000 with radio and tv advertising coming in at a strong second. Today those statistics are drastically different! This graph produced by Borrell Associates tracks ad spending for local advertisers.
